Synopsis
- South Africa is today one of the most dynamic and vigorous spaces of artistic practice. This series portrays Minnette Vari, Tracey Rose, Johan Thom and Thando Mama, four leading South African artists who work with their own body, documenting, altering and irrealizing their performances with video. Based on the same artistic tools, the results, however, are strikingly different.
Thom, influenced by poststructuralist thinking, challenges with often extreme physical actions all concepts that dare to speak with authority about the world.
"For me as a white South African I’m continuously reminded of my own ‘foreignness’and of being excluded to the whole idea of being ‘African’. Yet - I claim that space. I claim that space because to some degree it allows for slippage and transgression in the very notion of what ‘African’ is."
