Synopsis
- Tannhäuser yearns for his human existence in the realm of Venus. Only when he invokes the Virgin Mary does he manage to escape from the Goddess. The prospect of being reunited with his beloved Elisabeth prompts him to return home. In a song contest in the Wartburg the essence of love is to be fathomed. Tannhäuser's open avowal of lust infuriates the assembly, and they prepare to fight Tannhäuser.
