Synopsis
- This film tells the moving story of Rebiya Kadeer and her fight for the freedom of her people: the Uyghurs. Suppressed by China, the Muslim Uyghurs are not allowed to speak their language nor exercise their religion. Particularly since 9/11 they are pursued and killed by the Chinese. Rebiya Kadeer grew up in poverty. Through hard work she became a businesswoman and the first Uyghur to get a seat in the National People’s Congress. But in 1999, after protesting against human rights abuses, Rebiya Kadeer is tortured and sentenced to eight years in prison. Today she lives in exile in the US. This film is the intimate portrait of an extraordinary woman, who risks everything to fight for the freedom of her people. And it’s a tribute to Uyghur culture, which is about to disappear, unnoticed by the world’s media.
