Synopsis
- The opera – in a very free treatment of the mythological basis – deals with Princess Danae, who is to be wed to a rich suitor as the last economic hope of her bankrupt father Pollux. Instead of the expected King Midas, however, Jupiter appears after assuming the form of Midas. After some wavering back and forth, however, Danae does not succumb to his enticements and decides in favour of the real Midas even though he has apparently become a poor man. Jupiter thereupon renounces his love of mortal women.
