Synopsis
- Taking the enigmatic quality of the two heroic Old Testament figures of the title as his starting point, Kinmonth presents us with a search for identity in an age of growing interest in psychoanalysis. The question of identity, however, is explored at a national as well as individual level. The friend-foe lines of conflict are drawn up in all areas of society, conflict that is everywhere resolved in terms of ethnic, cultural, political, religious and sexual criteria. The Paris of the last third of the 19th century is a complex whirlwind of opulence and contrast that serves as a hotbed for the catastrophic wars of the 20th century. It serves as a theatre for the ideological war of the sexes played out between Samson and Delilah, both on a quest for their own identity.
