Synopsis
- The success of Puccini's Japanese tragedy [or Tragedy of a Japanese Woman] was not immediate: after the unhappy reception of the premiere in 1904 the composer several times changed the score; the version here is from 1906. Pier Luigi Samaritani's gives us this atmospheric story of a 15-year-old girl who marries a frivolous American naval officer and in so doing relinquishes her cultural identity.
