  • The complex and problematic relationship between colonization and European missionaries on the African continent.
Synopsis
  • This film exists in 3 versions : English, french and German

Le malentendu colonial (The Colonial Misunderstanding) looks at Christian evangelism as the forerunner of European colonialism in Africa, indeed, as the ideological model for the relationship between North and South even today. In particular it looks at the role of missionaries in Namibia on this the centenary of the 1904 German genocide of the Herrero people there. It reveals how colonialism destroyed African beliefs and social systems and replaced them with European ones as if they were the only acceptable routes to modernity. As Prof. F. Kangué Ewané says in the film: “I can forgive Westerners for taking away my land ...but not for taking away my mind and soul.” In this sense, Le malentendu colonial carries forward the essay director Jean-Marie Teno so eloquently began in Afrique, je te plumerai that Africa can only find its way into the 21st century based on its own traditions.

Le malentendu colonial (The Colonial Misunderstanding) weaves a nuanced argument that even today aid policies from western lending agencies and NGOs follow the missionary paradigm, forcing Africa to follow Europe’s development paths and priorities. Prof. Ewané believes that Africa can never recover from colonialism through economic or political processes alone. Any African Renaissance must, he contends, be based on a revaluation and reassertion of indigenous cultures and beliefs. This becomes harder and harder as globalization leaves less and less space for traditional or “marginal” cultures, not just in Africa but in the West as well. One might even conclude that rather than retreating to the particularities of the past, a more realistic alternative might lie in inventing a new global outlook based on deeper human values than those of hegemonic capitalism.

Le malentendu colonial (The Colonial Misunderstanding)is a major addition to the literature on colonial and post-colonial Africa and will be a stimulating text for classes in post-colonial theory, international development, African history and world history.
