In 1960 Sonia Rykiel married and had two children shortly after. Her husband was the owner of a small boutique, but she didn´t like the dresses being sold there. So she designed her own woolen jumper. The pullover was supposed to nestle to the skin and underline the figure. Within a very short time this first creation of Sonia Rykiel got on the cover of the „Elle“ - the Americans named her „Queen of knits“.
After her first big success and the divorce from her husband Sonia Rykiel opened her own boutique in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Paris‘ artist‘s and university quarter. Influenced by the social revolution around her, she freed the female body from the rigid silhouette of former decades. Today Sonia Rykiel looks back on 40 very successful years of creation. Like almost no other fashion designer she stands for sensuality, eroticism and feminine self-confidence. She and her carrot topped trapeze shape became iconic.
