Synopsis
- Fourteen year old Daniel studies Yiddish in Germany because he wants to communicate better with his grandparents in Israel. They are immigrants from Lithuania and their mother tongue is Yiddish. For more than a thousand years Yiddish has been the language and culture of survival for Jews in Europe. In Israel Yiddish has been suppressed in order to establish Hebrew as the national language. However, since 1996 Yiddish is allowed in schools and universities as a foreign language. Since then a renaissance of interest in Yiddish language and culture arises in Israel. An increasing number of writes publish in Yiddish, and Yiddish music and theatre becomes more popular.
