Synopsis
- In this opera, whose crassness of plot makes it a rare example of German Verismo, uplands and lowlands face off against each other, loaded with symbolism. At first glance the difficultly accessible mountain heights seem to represent innocence. This is the world of Pedro the shepherd, more familiar with his lambs than with people. Peerless master of the sinful lowlands is Sebastiano, who appears to wield power over all people and all things, even over isolated shepherds in the sparsely populated highlands.
