Synopsis
- The story of a Cinderella figure leading a marginalized existence as a servant in her parents' house and finally marrying the prince is one of the best loved themes of fairy tale literature. From a composer's viewpoint, therefore, he did not want for sources of material. The wealth of opera-friendly motifs and situations - the role reversal of master and servant, which has a long operatic history, the contrast between the beautiful innocent and her beastly sisters, and the moral of the story, with the certainty of good triumphing over evil - all this gave him ample opportunity to create both comic and touching scenes.
